Important Things to Know About Second Grade
Absences
We all have days when we need to miss school due to an illness, family emergency, or personal reason. When your child misses school, please call the Sunnyside attendance line at (651) 621-7601. If your child misses several days in a row, I will send missed work home for the child. Many things we do in class are difficult to make up. I will do my best to cover anything that might have been missed and will inform you if there are activities that can be done at home. If your child is going to be absent for 5 days or more, a form must be filled out in the office. Please remember that attendance is important, and we like your child to be at school whenever possible! There is a direct correlation between attendance and success in school.
Birthdays
We enjoy celebrating your child’s birthday at school! We will celebrate your child’s special day in song and with a book of cards created by classmates. Due to allergies, students will no longer be able to bring in birthday treats to share with the class. If you would like to donate a book to the class or purchase non-related food items (such as pencils or small toys), the students would love it!
At this age, birthday parties and celebrations are very special and important. It is a nice idea to extend birthday party invitations by phone or through the mail. Please do not send invitations to school. Those children who are not invited feel left out.
Toys in School
Please discourage your child from bringing toys to school. They can be a distraction and could become lost. All toys should be left at home for safe-keeping. Thanks for your cooperation in this area!
Star of the Week
Each child in class will get the opportunity to be “Star of the Week.” As Star of the Week, they will be the special helper for the week in class. On the Friday before their week, students will receive two sheets to take home and complete over the weekend. Please make sure that they are returned to school on Monday along with anything else that your child would like to share (for example: awards, favorite book, photos, drawing, etc.).
Supplies
Please check with your child frequently as the supply of pencils, crayons, glue, and notebook paper will deplete throughout the year. Thank you for helping in this matter.
Water Bottles
Students may bring clear water bottles to class. These bottles should contain water only. No sports drinks or juice. Small bottles with tops that pop up and do not have to be removed to take a sip are preferred. Please label your child’s bottle. Water bottles should be brought home, washed, and refilled each night.
Transportation Changes
Please let me know about any changes in your child’s dismissal routine. (i.e. they are being picked up instead of taking the bus, someone else is picking them up, playdates with other students, etc.) This is VERY important. If your “getting home” plan changes during the day, please inform the office and make sure they get me the message!! Students may not take the bus home with another student. They can only ride the bus that they’ve been assigned a bus pass for.
